AUTOMATIC SLACK ADJUSTERS REPLACEMENT - Continued
ADJUSTMENT
NOTE
Air brake system should be fully charged prior to adjustment.
1. Raise axle until wheels clear ground. Rotate manual adjustment hex (4) clockwise until brake
linings are snug against brakedrum.
NOTE
More torque is required to rotate manual adjustment hex counterclockwise than
is necessary to rotate it clockwise. Torque may be as high as 70 lb-ft (94.9 Nm).
2. Turn manual adjustment hex (4) counterclockwise 1/2 turn.
3. Apply 90 to 95 psi (621 to 655 kPa) air pressure from towing vehicle air gage. Make and hold a full
brake application. Measure push-rod (1) stroke. Maximum stroke is 2 in. (5.1 cm). If stroke exceeds
2-in. (5.1-cm) limit, inspect all brake system components for serviceability.
4. Tighten nut (2) on mounting bracket (3).
